School History
The Bayard School was named after Thomas F. Bayard (October 29, 1828-September 28, 1898), an American lawyer, politician, and diplomat from Wilmington, Delaware.
Mr. Bayard served as the United States Senator from Delaware for sixteen years (1869-1885). He was instrumental in keeping Delaware in the Union and was a contender for the Democratic nomination for president in 1880 and 1884.
Mr. Bayard was appointed Secretary of State by President Grover Cleveland in 1885. In 1893, Bayard was appointed ambassador to Great Britain, the first U.S. representative to Great Britain to hold that rank. His term at the American Embassy ended in 1897, and he died the following year.

The Bayard School (2019)
On February 13, 2018, the Christina Board of Education approved an agreement with the Governor's Office and the Department of Education that included innovative ideas for the City of Wilmington schools to improve student achievement. The Bayard School is a member of the Wilmington Schools Partnership with an agreement called a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that includes innovative ideas for the Wilmington schools to improve student achievement in Wilmington. The Wilmington Learning Collaborative is a voluntary network of schools in Wilmington across multiple districts to create consistency for students.
The Bayard School located at 200 S DuPont Street, Wilmington, is a grade 1-8 school that is dedicated to offering a comprehensive and systematic school program that will include impeccable instruction and the necessary resources for all our students to achieve academic success and age-appropriate social development. The Bayard School has an enrollment of over 570 students in grades 1-8. The Bayard School’s mascot is the Bulldog. The school colors are blue and white. The Bayard School has programs such as AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) and Advanced Academics. They have a Parent University that welcomes parent engagement to promote successful partnerships among parents, schools, and communities. The program provides free activities, courses, and workshops for parents to enhance their personal and family well-being.
